capitol hill report: HOW THE MIDTERMS WILL IMPACT NEUROLOGY

November 21, 2022

Latest Advocacy News

  • The AAN Annual Advocacy Priorities Survey is now open! Please participate to ensure your opinions are considered in our efforts for the coming year as we make our neurology voice heard by legislators, regulators, and other government officials. The survey closes on December 23.

  • The AAN sent four voting delegates to the Interim Meeting of the American Medical Association House of Delegates. During this meeting, important health care issues were debated including ensuring consistent rules surrounding pharmacy benefit administration, protecting the patient-physician relationship, topics relating to brain health, and more. Read the meeting highlights.

  • The Biden administration has committed to giving stakeholders at least 60-day notice prior to terminating the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE). The current PHE declaration is set to expire in mid-January. The 60-day notification deadline has passed without an update from the administration, indicating that the PHE will be extended at least one more time in 2023.

Issue in Focus

On Tuesday, November 8, people across the country went to the polls to vote in the 2022 midterm elections. While there are still some races that have not been called, it’s clear that we’ll have a divided government in the 118th Congress with Democrats holding the Senate and Republicans regaining the House.

Before votes were cast, BrainPAC, neurology’s political action committee, was already working to ensure that the champions of neurology were elected to Congress―and with the help of AAN members who contributed to our efforts, we had a successful election day! Below are our results to date:

  • Supported 148 candidates running for office
  • 96-percent win rate for supported candidates
  • Supported 17 physicians running for office
  • Helped elect 2 new physicians to the House
  • Helped elect 1 new senator

These efforts will help ensure the AAN has the relationships we need to hit the ground running when the 118th Congress starts working on health care policy next year.

If you have any questions about BrainPAC or the 2022 midterms, please contact brainpac@aan.com.
